Beautiful Woman | Pur One Med Spa

We have all heard talk of the dreaded double chin. This condition is also called submental fullness. It is a section of fat cells that collect in the submental area below the chin. It is an area of fat that is notoriously difficult to reduce or eliminate. This prescription medicine is one of the few ways to treat it non-surgically. Kybella is a prescription drug that is used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe under chin fat.

What is Kybella?

Kybella was approved by the FDA in 2015. It is intended to replace more invasive treatments like liposuction and surgical procedures. The primary ingredient in the drug itself is a synthetic deoxycholic acid. The natural version of this ingredient is found in human bile that helps your body digest fat. Typically, your body uses deoxycholic acid to break down fat in the digestive tract. This medicine does the same thing but in specific locations targeted by your doctor. This drug is injected into the problem area and slowly works to remove fat.

Once injected this synthetic drug works just like the original only in a concentrated region. The dissolved fat becomes cellular debris and is cleared away into the lymphatic and circulatory systems by custom immunologic cells. The synthetic acid is then metabolized and broken down by your body. This therapy is a slow process that takes several weeks. Kybella is only meant to reduce submental fat deposits. It is not a weight loss treatment.

What is the treatment process?

Before any injections take place, your doctor will meet with you to see if this type of chin fat reduction is right for you. It is vital to know your genetic history and the cause of your submental fat. Only a Kybella-trained health care specialist can give a Kybella treatment. During each session, the patient will receive a series of small injections under the chin. The whole process will take between fifteen and twenty minutes. The number of treatments required depends on your needs.

A more severe amount of fat will require more treatments. Your doctor will work with you to determine the right number of procedures for you. Each session should be at least one month apart and should not exceed more than six treatments overall. 59% of patients received six treatments. As far as recovery time goes, you can expect some slight swelling, bruising, or numbness beneath your chin.

You should inform your healthcare professional if you develop an uneven smile, weakness in facial muscles or difficulty when swallowing. Including injection site problems like bruising, hair loss, open sores, and tissue cell-death.
